Finding Balance

KRISTY LUND,

LIFE COACH

My work with clients starts with the balance wheel - what do the different areas of your life look like? It is a smooth ride or a bumpy one? If you could start by making changes in one area of your life, what would it be? With a lot of heart, warmth, fun, and laughter, I help my clients connect with their dreams, goals, and life purpose.

When my own life became unbalanced, it was hard to admit to myself, an occupational therapist studying everyday balance with a focus on mental health, that I didn’t know what balance in my own life meant. My previous “sure, why not” approach to tasks, responsibilities, and activities had led me to a place where I had no time for self-care. In addition, my habit of procrastinating until the last moment no longer worked in the "adult" world with family responsibilities. So, humbly, it was time to learn.

My PhD studies focused on "Balancing Everyday Life." Here are some things I learned about balance, from my training, research, and life:

Balance is not a destination, but rather a path of small actions and decisions that make up our lifestyle.

1.

Balance is different for everyone - but we all have basic self-care needs of sleeping enough, eating enough, and having time for both active and restful activities.

2.

Health is about balance and balance is about health

3.

Self-compassion is an important component to making lifestyle changes.

4.

Setting boundaries is crucial to finding balance. What do you need to say "No" to, in order to say "Yes" to something else?

5.

Balance can be times of too much, followed by time for recovery. But ideally, we find ways to have less of “too much” and more of “enough.”

6.

If we are constantly running at 110% of our capacity, there is no room for unexpected life events. What would filling your life 80% look like? What would you have room for?

7.

FUN and creativity in daily life is also an important part of balance!
